U Mumba emerge victorious in Maharashtra derby with a 34-31 win over Puneri Paltan

Our Predictions: U Mumba 53: 45 Puneri Paltan

Trust U Mumba to do the unbelievable! They avenged the loss against Puneri Paltan in the first leg of the Pro Kabaddi League Season 4 at the NSCI Dome at Mumbai. It was a perfectly scripted win by a 34-31 margin after trailing by two points with just about three minutes left.

U Mumba’s start was littered with complacent performances. Both the teams exchanged blows in the initial stages before Deepak’s raid and Anup’s raid made it 5-3 in favor of the home team in the 10th minute. It wasn’t long before Deepak restored parity in this low-scoring encounter, but Rakesh’s spectacular raid restored their 2-point lead in the very next minute.
A superb show by AnupKumar gave U Mumba a superb win that led to a stupendous 34-31 win against visitors Puneri Paltan after leading 15-13 at the break. This was the second instance where the defending champions of Season 2 came from behind with the earlier being against Bengaluru Bulls. The win took U Mumba in the top four with 32 points in ten matches. This setback has pushed the Pune behind in the qualification race with 31 points in eleven games.
The last three’four minutes of this tie proved to be tense for the teams as well as the spectators who definitely had their monies worth. At 21-21 in the 30th minute as a result of a two-point raid by Rishank, the tempo was raised. From there on there was intense drama unfolding and the authors responsible for that were the captain Anup Kumar and Ajay Thakur. There were time-outs with both coaches shouting out instructions and having animated discussions on court. The two raiders who kept the match on the boil were Anup for the winners and Deepak, Ajay and Sonu for the losers.
In the first minute of the second half, however, the visitors completed the all out on the defending champions by tackling the Indian captain, Anup. But, U Mumba came roaring back and by the 28th minute, took the lead through Anup’s raid.
For Puneri Paltan it was Deepak scored 8 points, Pahal’s contribution wasn’t significant. Ajay had five raid points with one super raid but he was tackled twice. Paltan’s lack of defence skills tonight cost them the match and has put their playoff chances in a spot of bother.
The Maharashtra Derby as the meeting was branded started on a sedate note with barely eight points on board by the 10th minute with the visitors leading 5-3. The teams were tense with nobody venturing to attack. It was a cat and mouse game but the way U Mumba played and won shows the confidence they had in their abilities. They kept pace with their rivals who were obviously circumspect owing to Manjeet’s absence. But Deepak Hooda did a good job of guiding the flock by calming their nerves.
Ajay thakur conjured up the raid of the match when he returned to the Pune half with 3 points after his raid in the 15th minute to give his side a 10-9 lead. Anup completed the all out on the visitors as they took a 5-point lead with half-time in sight. Suresu and Rishank made sure they did not go into the half trailing by a big margin as they helped U Mumba score 4 quick, unanswered points to end the half leading 15-13.
The Puneri Paltan started the half with a superb tackle on Rishank.
U Mumba were in the lead (24-22) in the 31st minute. Ajay Thakur levelled the score 6 minutes from time, but Anup made it a 3-point game soon after. Rishank’s unsuccessful raid in the 37th minute revived the dangerous Deepak as the game went into the final stages with the home side leading by a solitary point.
